Dear Fans of “Springtime” Smallbore Bench Rest Shooting:
It looked a bit “iffy” weather-wise this morning for the inaugural 2016 .22LR 50yd Bench Rest Fun Shoot. Snow was falling, rain was promised after the snow, and the clouds looked like they were permanent. The only good thing was the gentle wind (but we were deceived here).
Still, the show must go on. The worst case scenario would be that the match would resemble a winter match but with closer targets and the only thing to suffer would be the attendance numbers.
Despite all this, twenty-seven matches were logged, two with iron sights and 25 with scopes. And it can safely be reported that a good (but cold) time was had by all.
A note on the wind: sometimes form the north (our preferred direction), sometimes from the south, sometimes from the west – and these could all be present in a single flight. And the intensity was all but constant. Our Friend the Wind was making herself known, more in an arbitrary and capricious manner than in a raging fury, but still making herself known.
We had one new shooter, Larron Dolence (a familiar figure at the winter matches), join us and one returning shooter, Dennis VanDenbos, who last participated in one match in 2014. We welcome both and hope their schedules allow for many more Mondays on the firing line.
My thanks as always to all who helped with the myriad of tasks necessary for running a successful event. And of course my thanks to all who tested their skills against the elements in this first match of the season.
