Dear LVSA Members, Especially Those Who Like Statistics:
Back in August 2011 when we started the .22LR 50yd Bench Rest Fun Shoot series, the general consensus was that a single round score of 200 was next to impossible to reach, and that a match score of 400 was simply out of the question. And 20 X’s per target or 40 X’s per match? Forget about it.
While we never really articulated it, I think we all felt that our friend the wind was firmly in control when nearing these lofty levels of performance.
Don’t bet on it. On May 21, 2012, during the 5th match of the second season, both Tom Spriggs and Ron Collins reached the first milestone with scores of 200 – 16X and 200 – 11X respectively. Going into that match, 116 scores (232 targets) were in the match archive.
Three weeks later, on June 11, 2012, during the 8th match of the second season, Russ Collins reached the second milestone with a score of 400 – 25X. Going into that match, 163 scores (326 targets) were in the books.
The third milestone, a perfect 200 – 20X target, came on May 6, 2013, shot by Dan Thomas. Going into that match, the second one in the third season, 468 scores (936 targets), were under our belts.
And the final milestone, a perfect 400 – 40X match, came on May 23, 2016, at the hands of Tom Spriggs firing his Kimber. This came during the fifth match of the sixth season. By this time we had logged 2,945 matches (5,890 targets).
Over the years, participation has increased from 12 to almost 40 per match, and scores have increased from an average of 365 – 9X in 2011 to 393 – 22X in 2016. This year’s average to date is 391 – 20X.
We are all becoming better shooters and better friends (even counting our friend the wind) by our participation in these matches.
As Match Director, I would like to congratulate those named above for their accomplishments as well as every person who has sat down at the firing line on Monday afternoons to put their skill to the test. As I have often said with little fear of contradiction, a good time has been had – and will continue to be had – by all.
Charlie Piette
