.22LR 50yd BR Results – 08.03.15

August 3, 2015

Dear SB BR Weather Fans:

What’s the old saying about if you don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes and it will change? Well, the time frame was a little longer, but this old saw proved to be true in today’s .22LR 50yd Bench Rest Fun Shoot.

When the set-up crew began it’s work at about 1:45 the wind was howling, about the same intensity as last week. As shooters started arriving, the speculation was that the match would be cancelled because of the wind. When we set the first flight’s targets at 2:45 the wind was mild and steady from the south – great conditions for shooting. These persisted for five flights.

But half way through flight 6, black clouds, major wind, and pelting rain moved in from the south. The targets were luffing in the wind even as they were being soaked by rain. Cancellation loomed,

It should be noted that at this point several shooters made the decision not to continue. Lack of light, wind, and overall poor conditions were the factors leading to their choice.

But in time, the rain dropped off (it never really stopped) and the wind decreased, the decision was made to soldier on – with a mulligan given to those flight six shooters who wanted it (an executive decision made by the competition committee).

The last four flights were contested under very low wind conditions – more great conditions for shooting.

Thirty-seven matches were logged, six in irons, 31 in scopes, with 33 complete matches plus one partial match being recorded, five in irons plus the partial and 28 in scopes.

Thanks to Dennis Koppenhafer for sharing with us the bounty of his garden. Thanks to all who helped with the match. And thanks to all who participated from the firing line.

The wind conditions in these last two matches are already passing into legend. As the stories are retold around the campfire, no one will doubt that a good time was definitely had by all.
